1. Shijo Dori (Central Kyoto)

The main street of Kyoto midtown. Here are several stores based. Among others top designers like Luis Vuitton. If you haven't booked a Hotel yet try to get one around this area. If you want to make a capsule Hotel experience I recommend the "Centurion Cabin Hotel and Spa". It has its own wellness area with showers and "oyu" like a big jakuzzi and a sauna. You can get a night here for around $ 30.

2. Teramachi Dori

Teramachi Dori

It's a long, very long shopping walk street with several shops. A good place to get some souvenirs. There are also stores to buy some rare anime figures. If you haven't eaten breakfast yet you should try the avocado hotdog at Tully's Coffee place in this street.

3. Nishiki Market

 

Nishiki Market

On half way of the "Teramachi dori" on your left hand site you can find the Nishiki Market. It's a narrow roofed street with several food stores. Fresh seafood or sweets - you'll definitely find here something.

4. Shinkyogoku Dori

Shinkyogoku dori

Like the Teramachi dori street the Shinkyogoku dori street has several shops as it's the parallel street. Next to the shopping possibilities there are also some pet shops. If you feel like drinking your coffee or tea in company with a cute dog you are lucky today! The fun begins for 880 yen. Next to the "Kyoto Mameshiba Cafe" is also a cat and owl forest. For sure separated from each other! Admission is 700 - 800 yen!

5. Kiyamachi Dori (Bar District)

The Kiyamachi Dori is a bar area and also the red light district of Kyoto. Even if it is a red light district it has a lot of charm with its cute little river and the bridges. Among the bars there are also a couple of restaurants.

6. Pontocho Alley

Pontocho Alley

Time to eat?! In the back of the red light district is the small narrow Pontocho Alley hidden. With the same charm of old town style you can find here small restaurant and "izakaya" (Japanese small bars).

7. Motoyoshicho (Gion)

The part of the famous "Gion" district and definitely a must visit for those who like to see the old town of Kyoto. Fortunately it's not destroyed from World War II at all so we can enjoy these super old buildings. The whole "Gion" district is full of unique old buildings like for example the "Tatsumi Bridge" which one you will also find at this point.

8. Hanamikoji Dori (historic geisha district)

The very famous "Hanamikoji dori" street in Kyoto. It's the main street of the historical geisha district "Gion". Even it's the historical geisha district don't think you'll see here a lot of Geishas. If you are lucky you are possible to encounter here sometimes one or two. Please be kind when you face one they are a bit like small deer.

9. Kennin-Ji

 

Kennin-Ji

🕒 Open: 10:00-16:30

A humble temple area owned by a private family. If you want to visit the building you have to pay 500 yen admission. If you are just interested to observe the outer appearances it's free of charge!

10. Nineizaka

 

Nineizaka

On your way back from the main temple you should visit the Nineizaka area with its lovely pagoda and traditional homes. Small advice - do it on your way back otherwise you'll have to go upstairs instead of down which is for sure much more convenient.

11. Matsubara Dori

Matsubara Dori

🕒 Open: 8:30-17:30

This is the main street which brings you up to the Kiyomizu shrine. There are a lot of souvenir shops. Find here traditional hand fans, chop sticks, clothes or sweets (e.g. Macha ice cream or cookies).    

12. Kiyomizu Shrine

 

Kiyomizu Shrine

💳 Admission: 400 ¥

🕒 Open: 6:00-18:00

The Kiyomizu shrine is the goal of this tour and this hill. Everyone pilgrimage to this place. It's since 1994 part of the world heritage and a terrific construction. The entry for the facilities and the backyard is 400 yen. The temple buildings are from 1633. The name Kiyomizu is translated with clear water and is connected to the nearby waterfall.
